The Definition of an Educated Person - 626 Words
Our team likes this definition of an educated person. We understand that if you go to school, you will learn a subject well. But we also understand that many of us will see career paths that are not traditional, or linear in nature. We will work in fields that are not what we studied. If all we learned was basic skills and knowledge, we would cease to be educated the minute we stepped away from our chosen field of study. What the Michigan State University is trying to say is that education is more than just learning a few things to get a degree. Education being an educated person really does mean being able to continuously learn. To have knowledge and to know how to use it are both components of being educated. We feel, therefore, that the definition of an educated person put forth by Michigan State University is very accurate. The statement is succinct, so that we might not want to add anything to the definition. It implies that the process of becoming an educated person is something that will deliver a lifetime of value, rather than simply a skill that can be used to get a job. This lifetime value is one of the reasons why an education usually pays for itself manifold down the road, as students who become educated people are more adaptable, more successful and better able to succeed when placed in difficult situations. Adversity is not discussed in the definition, but is definitely something that could be mentioned in a discussion of what it means to be an educatedShow MoreRelatedTest Scores On Standardized Tests1017 Words à |à 5 Pagesââ¬Å"well-educatedâ⬠as ââ¬Å"having or showing a high level of education.â⬠The opposite of ââ¬Å"well-educatedâ⬠according to Thes aurus.com includes antonyms such as ââ¬Å"ignorantâ⬠, ââ¬Å"unsophisticatedâ⬠, ââ¬Å"stupidâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"uninformedâ⬠. Paul Gauguin Painting Analysis Essay Example For Students
Paul Gauguin Painting Analysis Essay Texture The texture of this painting is smooth but very layered and it is a stimulated texture as it is trying to imitate texture and in this case he used a thick paint to build up textures. This is also adds to the #D feeling of the surface. Tone or Tonal Value This artwork has a medium contrast which means there are a balanced amounts of black, white and grays. Line This artwork consists of straight, curved, flowing, hard, soft-edged, continuous and bold lines. The lines are all natural edges of shapes and the lines are often used to outline the shapes such as the people to make them stand out and have a definite shape. Form As this painting was painted on a flat surface, the objects are painted to look like 3D forms or feel round due to shading inside the object from light to dark and shadows which are cast on surfaces they are placed on. One can notice an immediate shadow under one of the men which has his back faced to the viewer. This shows that it is a 3D object and consumes volume and space. Shape The shapes in this artwork are mostly organic (natural) shapes. Color This artwork consists of: -Primary colours such as blue and yellow -Secondary colors such as green, orange and some purple -Tertiary colors such as yellow-green and red-orange -Cold colors such blue, green and green-yellow -The colors also contrast greatly with each other and many bright colours are used Space The positive space consists of all the humans and living things which are mostly in the foreground and the rest of the painting such as a mix of colours to create the background is the negative space. Perspective/Depth Perspective is used in this artwork to create an illusion or an impression of depth and also to create a 3D effect. The way in which it was achieved was by atmospheric perspective where objects such as mountains are blue due to the amount of atmosphere between the artist and the mountain and in this case it is true. It was also achieved by using diminution of size/scale which is where all the objects in the foreground are bigger than the ones in the background. Principles of Art Balance As one can see, this art work is not balanced by the same number of people on each side but the dark browns balance out light turquoise-blue on the right hand side. Therefore because the right has more objects, a lighter colour has been used to weigh it out. This is asymmetrical balance where objects are more on the one side and to restore balance, the other side is darkened to feel heavier. Repetition The colors are used more than once, especially the same colors of yellow, orange, blue and brown. This creates unity and also creates visual rhythm. Contrast The colors contrast greatly in this artwork. Colors such as green and red and orange and blue are placed next to one another which are complimentary colors. The lighter colors stand out in contrast to the darker background. These factors all create excitement and visual interest. Variety There is a lot of variety in this artwork as the colors contrast so greatly and no two figures or any objects are the same. It attracts oneââ¬â¢s attention and adds visual interest, it also keeps the attention of the viewer as there is so much to see and a story to be told but without it being overpowering. Focal Point The eye is immediately drawn to the figure standing just to the right of the middle of the painting. It is eye grabbing, as it is the lightest figure as well as the biggest. It is also the only figure standing up in the foreground and the only figure in the painting with both arms reaching up as well as its head looking up. Because of this, it is almost isolated and therefore the focal point. .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 , .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .postImageUrl , .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 , .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:hover , .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:visited , .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:active { border:0!important; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:active , .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2 .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf968f69fc6671cf26d0ca06d9b60d5b2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Popular modern styles of painting EssayMovement This painting is supposed to be read like a story book from right to left, starting with the baby and ending with the old figure next to the duck. Because of this, there is a rhythm by the way in which the figures lead to another. The rhythm goes from the bottom right hand corner, up to the top of the painting and then back down again in the bottom left hand corner.

Keys to Small Business Marketing
KEYS TO SMALL BUSINESS MARKETING Kimberly Smith, University of Houston Small Business Development CenterEach year, about 400,000 new small businesses open their doors to the economic landscape in their communities. But according to www.bloomberg.com, a whopping 80 percent of these new ventures will fail within the first 18 months. Whatââ¬â¢s the difference between one energetic, inspired entrepreneur with an idea that succeeds and a similar one who just canââ¬â¢t seem to get his or her business off the ground? To answer that question, I spoke with Kimberly Smith, director of marketing and publicity at the University of Houston Small Business Development Center. She shared her insights about strategic marketing tactics and how they help small businesses across all industries build their brand. ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢re an entrepreneur with a great idea, and youââ¬â¢ve had big sales at opening that later tapered off, you might be experiencing a combination of problems,â⬠said Smith. ââ¬Å"When business owners come to me for advice, I tell them in order to be successful, they have to have a well-planned, well-researched marketing strategy.â⬠According to Smith, if youââ¬â¢re a new or aspiring small business owner, there are five fundamental elements of a marketing strategy that will move you closer to achieving your business goals in the first year and beyond. Marketing Strategy Doââ¬â¢s: 1. DO identify your ideal target market for your product or service. It might be that everyone is your ââ¬Å"target market,â⬠but not everyone is ideal. Find out exactly who needs your service or product, who wants it, and who can afford it. Do lots of research, and find out exactly who fills those three categories. ââ¬Å"For example, when Apple started marketing their computers, they knew they wouldnââ¬â¢t be appealing to the cheapest consumers, so they used a different approach to marketing,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"They advertised (their product) as a ââ¬Ëwork of artââ¬â¢ that would appeal specifically to people who would appreciate art ââ¬â like graphic designers, illustrators, innovators, musicians. That made the market much smaller and easier to target.â⬠2. DO figure out How to reach your ideal target market. Where are the people who need, want, and can afford what youââ¬â¢re selling? How can you get the word out to them? ââ¬Å"The best way to answer these questions is to do a lot of research,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"So, if your ideal target market is professional women between the ages of 30-40, the next step is to figure out where they purchase. Online? In brick and mortar stores? Do they listen to certain TV or radio shows?â⬠Smith said that pinpointing the specific buying behaviors of your target market will lead you to the most effective places to spend your advertising dollars. Follow up with social media. ââ¬Å"Figure out which social media platform is the best fit for your product, and start posting there,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"It takes time and effort, but it pays off.â⬠Helpful Hint: Call a TV or radio station, or a community newspaper ââ¬â any publication that posts a website with banner ads. Tell them youââ¬â¢re looking at their ads, and explain which market youââ¬â¢re trying to reach with your product or service. They can tell you exactly who their ads will connect with, so youââ¬â¢ll know if your advertising money will be well spent there or if you need to keep looking. Free Advice: ââ¬Å"The librarian here at the Small Business Development Center at the University of Houston will run a competitive marketing analysis free of charge for any small business owner,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢ll help you figure out the trends so you can market more effectively in your particular industry.â⬠3. DO use surveys. If youââ¬â¢re in business, you have access to people. Itââ¬â¢s always a good idea to ask them questions about your products and services. ââ¬Å"Even if youââ¬â¢re still at pre-venture stage and you donââ¬â¢t have actual customers yet, survey your friends and family,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"Ask them if they think the price points youââ¬â¢ve set are acceptable. Get as much feedback as you can about that.â⬠Ask how often they might need or want the product or service youââ¬â¢re selling, and how they tend to receive information about new products ââ¬â online, social media, flyers in the mailbox? ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s extremely useful information for your new business,â⬠Smith said. For new businesses that have already opened, Smith suggested a by-invitation-only special party consisting of a specific focus group of guests. ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢ve opened, you can use your own place to bring customers in after hours, let them know how much you appreciate them, and ask them to answer a few survey questions,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"The feedback youââ¬â¢ll get from this is invaluable.â⬠4. DO claim and maintain your online presence. Too often, business owners believe their online profile ends at their website. ââ¬Å"If you want to succeed, you need to get beyond your website and set up profiles on Yelp, Google, the Yellow Pages, and Google Plus,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"Claim them. Take control of your online profile. Make sure all of them convey a consistent message about your business, and all the details are correct across all of them ââ¬â your selling proposition, your business hours, your contact information.â⬠That also will positively affect your search engine optimization (SEO), which is essential for targeting your customers and driving traffic to your website. ââ¬Å"It helps to be at the top of the page when someone is searching for a business that has your products or services,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"All the information should match. Itââ¬â¢s surprising how many inconsistencies there are from site to site with basic information like store hours. Thatââ¬â¢s confusing to the customers. Your pages should be constantly monitored and maintained.â⬠5. DO create a marketing plan using these elements. Smith said small business owners donââ¬â¢t always understand what she means when she tells them how important it is to create a marketing plan, but it just means pulling together the four previous points. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just a way to make sure youââ¬â¢re finding your target audience, youââ¬â¢ve identified your unique selling points, and youââ¬â¢ve set goals with a plan to achieve them,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re not just selling. Youââ¬â¢ve got an efficient, clear plan in place, and youââ¬â¢re progressing toward your goal.â⬠Marketing Strategy Donââ¬â¢ts: Not only should new business owners take an active role in planning and implementing their marketing strategy, they also should be wary of traps that can undermine their efforts. When entrepreneurs run out of money, itââ¬â¢s often because theyââ¬â¢re overconfident, their marketing message doesnââ¬â¢t connect with consumers, or they underestimate the need to keep up digitally. Smith said the following poor practices are a recipe for new business failure. 1. DONââ¬â¢T make assumptions. If a business owner assumes his product or service is so great that everyone will buy it, heââ¬â¢s in for a big disappointment, Smith said. ââ¬Å"This shows a real lack of focus and research into the ideal target market. Let people try your product or service for free and get feedback. That tactic usually works very well and teaches the owner a lot about how people are receiving his product or service.â⬠2. DONââ¬â¢T design your own logo or own website. Brand image is everything, and if itââ¬â¢s not on par with your competitorsââ¬â¢, your target customer base will not take you seriously. ââ¬Å"Unless youââ¬â¢re a trained graphic designer, hire a professional to do your logo and your website,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"People often think cheapest is best, but the smart thing is to set aside the money you need to get a good website and logo, and hire a very reputable person to do them.â⬠3. DONââ¬â¢T create too many social media profiles. Itââ¬â¢s better to have one or two well-maintained social media profiles that fit your business than to have a lot of profiles that donââ¬â¢t get any traffic. ââ¬Å"Your ideal target market canââ¬â¢t necessarily be reached on all social media platforms,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s impossible to keep posting on multiple social media pages, so choose one or two that match your products and services and post regularly. Donââ¬â¢t get on Pinterest if youââ¬â¢ve got a business or service that doesnââ¬â¢t apply.â⬠Hint: When the last post on a social media page is from a year ago, it could imply that youââ¬â¢re no longer in business, which causes customers to look elsewhere. 4. DONââ¬â¢T ignore bad reviews. When customers leave a bad review on Yelp or Google, donââ¬â¢t think it wonââ¬â¢t affect you. ââ¬Å"When people search for your business, those reviews will come up,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"Negative reviews deter people from your business, whether theyââ¬â¢re true or not.â⬠She said itââ¬â¢s best to reply to each bad review and apologize for failing to meet expectations. Then offer something to make it right with the customer. 5. DONââ¬â¢T rely on referrals or word of mouth. You work hard to earn a good reputation and have your clients tell their friends about you, but relying on them to do that is another trap that can lead to failure. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the ââ¬Ëif I build it, they will comeââ¬â¢ theory,â⬠Smith said. ââ¬Å"If you create a marketing plan and remain consistent, you do a good job with your customers, and you get lots of referrals and good word of mouth, imagine how well youââ¬â¢d do with advertising,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Advertising expands your customer base. If youââ¬â¢re already doing well, advertising will help you go beyond referrals and word of mouth. You can make enough money to hire more employees and go sit on the beach!â⬠BIO Kimberly Smith has nearly 20 years of experience in marketing and public relations. With the direction of the executive director, she is principally responsible for the marketing of the Texas Gulf Coast Small Business Development Center Network, the largest economic development program of the University of Houston System. Solving Problems With a Distance-Rate-Time Formula
Solving Problems With a Distance-Rate-Time Formula In math, distance, rate, and time are three important concepts you can use to solve many problems if you know the formula. Distance is the length of space traveled by a moving object or the length measured between two points. It is usually denoted by d in math problems. The rate is the speed at which an object or person travels. It is usually denoted byà rà in equations.à Time is the measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition exists or continues. In distance, rate, and time problems, time is measured as the fraction in which a particular distance is traveled. Time is usually denoted by t in equations.à Solving for Distance, Rate, or Time When you are solving problems for distance, rate, and time, you will find it helpful to use diagrams or charts to organize the information and help you solve the problem. You will also apply the formula that solves distance, rate, and time, which isà distance rate x time. It is abbreviated as: d rt There are many examples where you might use this formula in real life. For example, if you know the time and rate a person is traveling on a train, you can quickly calculate how far he traveled. Andà if you know the time and distance a passenger traveled on a plane, you could quickly figure the distance she traveled simply by reconfiguring the formula. Distance, Rate, and Time Example Youll usually encounter a distance, rate, and time question as aà word problemà in mathematics. Once you read the problem, simply plug the numbers into the formula. For example, suppose aà train leaves Debs house and travels at 50 mph. Two hours later, another train leaves from Debs house on the track beside or parallel to the first train but it travels at 100 mph. How far away from Debs house will the faster train pass the other train? To solve the problem, remember that d represents the distance in miles from Debs house and tà represents the time that the slower train has been traveling. You may wish to draw a diagram to show what is happening. Organize the information you have in a chart format if you havent solved these types of problems before. Remember the formula: distance rate x time When identifying the parts of the word problem, distance is typically given in units of miles, meters, kilometers, or inches. Time is in units of seconds, minutes, hours, or years. Rate is distance per time, so its units could be mph, meters per second, or inches per year. Now you can solve the system of equations: 50t 100(t - 2) (Multiply both values inside the parentheses by 100.)50t 100t - 200200 50t (Divide 200 by 50 to solve for t.)t 4 Substitute t 4 into train No. 1 d 50t 50(4) 200 Now you can write your statement. The faster train will pass the slower train 200 miles from Debs house. Sample Problems Try solving similar problems. Remember to use the formula that supports what youre looking for- distance, rate, or time. d rt (multiply)r d/t (divide)t d/r (divide) Practice Question 1 A train left Chicago and traveled toward Dallas. Five hours later another train left for Dallas traveling at 40 mph with a goal of catching up with the first train bound for Dallas. The second train finally caught up with the first train after traveling for three hours. How fast was the train that left first going? Remember to use a diagram to arrange your information. Then write two equations to solve your problem. Start with the second train, since you know the time and rate it traveled: Second traint x r d3 x 40 120 milesFirst traint x r d8 hours x r 120 milesDivide each side by 8 hours to solve for r.8 hours/8 hours x r 120 miles/8 hoursr 15 mph Practice Question 2 One train left the station and traveled toward its destination at 65 mph. Later, another train left the station traveling in the opposite direction of the first train at 75 mph. After the first train had traveled for 14 hours, it was 1,960 miles apart from the second train. How long did the second train travel? First, consider what you know: First trainr 65 mph, t 14 hours, d 65 x 14 milesSecond trainr 75 mph, t x hours, d 75x miles Then use theà d rtà formula as follows: d (of train 1) d (of train 2) 1,960 miles75x 910 1,96075x 1,050x 14 hours (the time the second train traveled)

Alberta Tar Sands Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Alberta Tar Sands - Essay Example The resulting oil is piped to refineries. This initial process of tar sand extraction is approximated to result in gasoline that carries at least five times more carbon dioxide than would usual crude oil production. According to the Canada National Energy Board, engineering advancements are predicted to decrease this extensive carbon dioxide emission. As shown in the graphic, the remaining 80 percent of the sands are too deep to be excavated, therefore, steam is injected into these deeper oil sands, loosening the bitumen and allowing producers to draw it upward. The process was known as "steam-assisted gravity drainage." It is believed to be more efficient than the "truck and steam" method. Even though producers recycle much of their water, about one barrel of water is lost for each barrel of oil collected. Developers are required to repair and restore oil sand mining sites to at least the corresponding amount of their preceding biological efficiency, including revegetation and drain age restoration (Laumer). Alberta Energy supports the accountable improvement of these extensive deposits through planning and cooperation with government, industry and communities to guarantee a viable royalty system that is attractive to investors, suitable regulations and ecological safeguard and the administration of Crown rights to oil sands while considering several barriers such as higher industrial threat and higher investment expenditures, which are experienced by oil sands developers ("Oil Sands"). Alberta's oil sands industry is the product of multi-billion-dollar ventures in infrastructure and technology needed to expand the non-conventional resource. In 2006, in accordance with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), production outlay in Alberta's oil sands totaled more or less $14 billion. Yearly oil sands production is developing progressively as the industry matures. Output of marketable oil sands production raised to1.126 millionbarrels per day (bbl/d) in 2006. Foreseeing in 2020, this level of production could reach 3 million barrels per day. In the year 2030, it could possibly be producing 5 million barrels per day. This scale of productivity would sustain the development of other major industries and witness Alberta become a Global Energy Leader ("Oil Sands"). Alberta's development of oil sands resources symbolizes a victory of industrial modernization. Through the years, government and industry have worked jointly to discover innovative and profitable means to develop and mine oil sands. Extensive research on energy is more essential today than ever before. Working through the Alberta Energy Research Institute, the Alberta government is dedicated to a mutual approach to encourage the latest technology and improvement programs that will decrease the impact of greenhouse gases and other emissions, and lessen the consumption of water and gas ("Oil Sands"). However, amidst all the benefits, risks eventually surfaced. Recently, the Environmental Defense released a new report on the Alberta Oil Sands, calling it "the most destructive project on Earth". Listed below are some facts: -Oil sands mining is permitted to use two times the amount of fresh water which is
